Edmonton and Calgary will renew their rivalry on the pitch once again, as FC Edmonton and Cavalry FC prepare for the fall edition of Al Classico, a home-and-home series featuring prospective Canadian Premier League players.
The first leg will be played in Calgary at Spruce Meadows, home of Cavalry FC, at 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 29th, with the return fixture held at Clarke Stadium, home of FC Edmonton, at 1:30 pm on Saturday, October 20th. Ticket information will be made available in the coming days.
In the spring, FC Edmonton’s Academy program, alongside alumni from the club’s North American Soccer League days, took on Calgary Foothills FC in the inaugural version of the Al Classico. Foothills won both the home and away matches comfortably, ahead of their championship season in the Premier Development League. The FC Edmonton Academy would go on to claim the Edmonton and District Soccer Association Men’s Premier League crown, as well as a Premier Provincial title.
“These two matches are a chance for Tommy and I to not only look at local players, but showcase to our fan bases the talent we know exists in Alberta,” FC Edmonton Head Coach Jeff Paulus explains. “Our supporters will also get to see some faces from the past and a vastly different lineup than the first Al Classico.”
“This is a fantastic opportunity for both clubs to look at local prospects vying for a chance to represent their city in next year’s CPL,” says Cavalry FC Head Coach Tommy Wheeldon, Jr. “Obviously this is part of the early identification phase of our respective team building, but one where we also get to involve the fans in the process and generate a glimpse into the unique game day experience at Spruce Meadows.”
