FC Edmonton is delighted to announce the signing of Swedish midfielder Erik Zetterberg for the 2020 Canadian Premier League (CPL) season.
Zetterberg came through the Falkenbergs FF youth system and eventually signed his first professional contract for the senior side in 2015. He featured eight times in the Swedish top division.
In 2018, the 22-year-old midfielder moved to Varvergs BoIS where he featured six times. He was then sent on loan to Tvååkers IF where he made an additional eight appearances.
“In Erik we are bringing in a player with fantastic pedigree,” FC Edmonton Head Coach & General Manager Jeff Paulus said. “We believe his soccer IQ and his ability in possession will be a big asset for us. He is a technician, who has a great range of passing. He can hit those diagonal balls to get our wingers involved down the flanks and he can link up with our attacking players. He’s a strong physical player, good on both sides of the ball. But his ability to read the game is what really sold us on him.”
Zetterberg comes from a soccer family. His father, Pär Zetterberg, featured 30 times for the Swedish national team. His father featured 61 times with Olympiacos and 284 times for Belgian giants Anderlecht. He is currently the assistant coach of Anderlecht.
