FC Edmonton announces Hanson Boakai has signed with the club for the upcoming 2020 Canadian Premier League (CPL) season.
Boakai spent the 2019 season playing in the top division in Finland with FC Inter Turki. Prior to his time in Finland, Boakai had stints playing in Sweden, Croatia, and Romania.
The 23-year-old winger made his professional debut while playing for FC Edmonton during the NASL era. Boakai joined the FC Edmonton Academy program in 2011 and after two years, he earned his first professional contract.
In 2013, Boakai made his debut as a 16-year-old which made him the youngest player to ever play in the NASL. He went on to make a total of 36 appearances in all competitions.
“He’s a kid with that special ability on the ball,” FC Edmonton Head Coach and Interim General Manager Paulus said. “When you look at the league and you see the impact of a Borges or a Bustos-type player, now we’ve got that kind of player at this club. Hanson Boakai is that player. He’s incredibly gifted on the ball, and his centre of gravity is low, making him hard to knock off the ball.”
“At 14 years old, he was the youngest player in our academy. At 16, he was the youngest player to ever play in the NASL, including the old NASL. This kid’s already done a lot at a young age, and for me, he satisfies a desperate need we had at FC Edmonton.
Boakai has gone on to represent Canada at various levels. He featured for the youth national team from U-15 to the U-23 level. He earned his first call up to the senior side in 2014 under Benito Floro for a friendly match against Colombia.
