THE LEGEND OF THE RALLY RABBIT
Since 2011, the Rally Rabbit has been a permanent hero of FC Edmonton fans. He’s appeared on club jerseys, supporter’s scarves, tickets and is now a social media star. He’s a part of our history, beloved by our fans.
It might be hard to understand why a rabbit (of all creatures) is leading the charge to bring back a professional sports team in Edmonton. But the reality is, he isn’t just a Rabbit. He’s our hero and a game-changer who brought us victory many times before.
FC Edmonton was born in February of 2010, with the club becoming a founding member of the North American Soccer League, which kicked off in 2011 – and that was when the club itself found its rallying symbol.
On June 26th, FC Edmonton faced the Montreal Impact at Foote Field, the club’s home for that 2011 season. In the opening minutes, a rabbit bounded onto the pitch, and planted itself right in front of the Impact net. Several attempts were made to chase the critter away, but the elusive bunny proved to be a tricky opponent, much to the delight of the crowd. Shortly after, Kyle Porter would score, the Eddies would win the match 1-0, and the legend of the Rally Rabbit was born.
Since that match, the Rally Rabbit has been a big part of the identity of FC Edmonton. Its silhouette can be found on the team’s jerseys, on supporter’s scarves, and even on tickets. The Northern Prairie Jackalope has made several unscripted appearances at matches, always receiving a warm welcome from the fans, and bringing a smile to everyone’s face, young and old. The Rally Rabbit is seen as a symbol of good luck for FC Edmonton, and is just one of those amazing pieces of sports lore that you simply cannot make up. He’s an essential part of our story and who we are.
